The British Curry Awards are the Oscars of the curry industry and The Spice Cube picked up Best in the North East. Quite an achievement considering almost 3,500 restaurants – more than one-third of the UK total – received at least one public nomination in the awards. Fifty-six made it through the various rounds of judging to compete for the main prizes.

The win comes on the back of two other recent Spice Cube triumphs:
- Awarded overall ‘Curry Chef 2010' title in a North East competition organised by the region's councils and led by South Tyneside Council's Food Safety Team to promote the trade of local Asian restaurants and raise food hygiene standards
- Named Newcastle's ‘Curry King' in competition organised by Newcastle City Council's food safety team
Director Jalf Ali believes the success is testament to the quality of the food on offer, coupled with creativity, innovation and a forward thinking approach to the dining experience. His aim is to bring real Indian food to the North East that looks great, tastes fantastic and can be enjoyed by all the family.
He believes the North East is an excellent base for business, because the area offers plenty of opportunity to innovate and has a thriving social scene which is critical to the hospitality and leisure market.
